7.30 AM
My day starts with a bus and train ride into the city. I like to read the Australian Financial Review and listen to music during the commute. The train station is only a short walk to the Arup Sydney office.
8.15 AM
I say hello to my team and pick a desk, and we head down to my favourite coffee shop Batch where the barista always remembers my order. I get my coffee for $2 for taking my red Arup mug.
8.30AM
I check my emails and go through my daily list of tasks. I spend my morning analysing civil works drawings for a large highway project in Melbourne. I have been working with a Senior Engineer in my team to learn a new way of analysis and testing our designs, so they are ready for construction. It has been a slow process, but I am getting faster every day.
11.00 AM
We have our team meeting today where we take the time to connect as a team. One of our suppliers is a guest speaker, telling us about new compliant road drainage products available on the market. It’s important to have a broad knowledge of current market products to incorporate into drainage systems design and in justifying our recommendation to the client.
12.30 PM
Time to refuel! I head down to Fishbowl, my go-to lunch, and grab a poke bowl. I walk back to the office and join my colleagues for lunch. We have a great open space to connect over lunch time.
1.30 PM
I am a member of our ConnectSTEM group formed to promote diversity in STEM and I join our bi-monthly meeting. I am helping organise a school tour and learning event for Loretto Kirribilli, which aims to inspire and empower female high school students to consider a career in engineering.
3.00 PM
Time to celebrate. Our team recently submitted the last design package for a new motorway connection in New South Wales. To celebrate, we are go-karting!
5.00 PM
It is the last Thursday of the month, so it is time for our monthly office get together. This month, with the help of some other grads, I have organised a tropical themed event. It’s a great way for the whole office to connect.
